A day for lovers and hopeless romantics of all ages – or a day for over consumption and endless amounts of rubbish?
Because Valentines Day as we now know it is such a recent phenomenon, means it can easily be reversed. The significance of the day itself goes back centuries, but the commercialised aspect is a more recent addition. The amount of plastic waste generated for this day alone is not a sign of love for anyone on this planet. Here are a few tips to ensure you have the most eco-friendly, yet romantic day with your loved one:
- If your going out for a meal, support a restaurant that uses local, seasonal ingredients, cutting down on food miles and the Carbon Dioxide associated with it.
- If you’re cooking try vegetarian or high welfare meat
- Buying lingerie can be problematic at the best of times, without ever considering the materials and labour that goes into making it. The materials used are mostly synthetic and the processes and labour practices used are all too often less than ethical. There are lots of producers and retailers now specialising in eco friendly, ethically created lingerie – make sure to find and support those businesses that are going the extra mile.
- Source environmentally friendly and ethical roses
- Consider experiences instead of material gifts
- Cut back on packaging
There is loads a to love about Valentines Day – plastic waste just isn’t one of them.
