I eventually built up the courage and decided to turn my heap of compost that I made and covered in early August. I had this job built up so much in my head, that every other task in the world was getting done first. After all of it (with a little help from my other half) hte whiole lot only took an hour and a half.

What had started as half rotten seaweed, horse manure, garden waste  and lawn cuttings, turned into almost usable compost. After turning it, I covered it again, to keep out the rain and hopefully in another few weeks, once the garden has been cleared out, I will turn it once more – into the wheelbarrow and out onto the garden. I think we have enough this year to cover our glasshouse beds, our 4 raised beds out side and about half of the ground we intend planting next year.

This is my first year of trying the Charles Dowding No Dig system and has been a steep learning curve. Starting a bit earlier and being more proactive in sourcing the bulky raw materials, should hopefully result in a higher return of compost next year, with a little less effort or panicing.

Here’s to more gardening and less weeding in 2021!
