This project began as a selfless way to get a few thoughts into words and maybe help people be more environmentally aware, by showing the small things we can all do. Over the past number weeks though, due to the release of an updated map of the World in the year 2050, my motives are becoming quite selfish. This map shows sea levels throughout the world in the future – and you guessed it, my house is in the red zone, ie by 2050 we will be underwater. Not exactly going to be submerged like the lost city of Atlantis, or Spongebobs house in Bikini Bottom, but if predictions are right, all the land, roads etc surrounding us will be underwater – with our house within the tidal area.
This is a very real warning of the possibilities and probabilities of business as usual. By the very nature of scientific predictions, the dates and levels aren’t professed as set in stone, but more what is very likely to happen if we continue adding Carbon Dioxide to our atmosphere at the increasing rate we are currently projecting. This is going to take more than a bit of cycling or recycling to fix, but I still really believe that if we don’t get massive numbers of people to start making small changes and to continue to improve their actions, we are never going to solve this problem.
I live in a very rural part of Ireland and I can’t see too many politicians getting too bothered if my family or I get wet feet, but is it going to take for large areas of the Worlds largest cities to also suffer the same fate, for politicians to react? If it does, then we are too late. It will always be the poorest in these areas that are worst affected, with the more affluent, always having the option to move inland, or to a different country if necessary.
